Situated at the foothills of Sierra Espuņa about 30km west of Murcia city, Alhama is so named because of its Roman baths and thermal waters dating back 2000 years.
Overlooking the town is the castle which dates back to the end of the 11th century. A number of festivals take place throughout the year, the major ones being Easter (Semana Santa), May (Los Mayos) and October.
The region of Murcia is situated in the South East of Spain between Valencia and Andalucia.
Known as the "orchard of Europe" for its wonderful fresh produce, it is still very Spanish in character and has 250km of coastline.
Further inland there is lovely countryside, small towns and villages and mountains, including the Sierra Espuņa, an area designated as National Parkland.
The three main cities of Murcia region are Cartagena, Lorca and Murcia itself.
The region of Murcia enjoys a mediterranean climate with an average 320 days of sunshine per year. Rainfall is very low, and generally occurs in late Autumn and Spring.
Winter temperatures can reach the mid 20īs during daytime, although evenings can be cool.
